There is something deep inside all of us. A spirit that drives us to explore the unknown, to hunt hard problems, to find love. We are not widgets. We are not nodes in a system. But today, powerful forces are working to extinguish that spirit. Technology harvests our attention and uses it to steer us. It does not have to be this way.
Technology has been a force for good. Living standards have risen for a hundred years. Billions have climbed out of poverty. Food is abundant. Lives are longer than ever. Building and using technology is how humans advance. But recent technology has turned toward a different goal: aggregating humans at scale.
When the internet arrived, human knowledge went digital. The promise was access for everyone. Before, knowledge belonged to whoever lived near a great library or knew the right expert. The internet broke that barrier.
Then it shifted. Search centralized into Google because Google was the best tool. At some point, Google learned it could direct search for profit. Advertising paid for it. What looked like open search became a controlled hub that decided what people saw. To do this, Google had to track everything its users did. Users, choosing ease, let it. Now the system knows the user better than the user knows himself.
Social media ran the same play. At first it was a simple way to map your friends digitally — to connect, to find new people. Then a few platforms concentrated it all: Meta, Instagram, X, TikTok. Once centralized, use became harvest. First they tracked your interests. Then they tracked your conversations. Every message became raw material for selling to you. The platform’s interest came first. Yours came second.
Now comes AI. Your interests and your networks were already harvested. Now your thoughts are. AI works inside your own thinking — and it works; people build faster with it than without. But every interaction, every intention, is being stored and analyzed. The shape of what comes next is familiar: a platform that puts itself first and monetizes your mind.
After that, robots will digitize your physical actions. Same process.
Does it have to be this way? We are told there are two choices: accept the tradeoffs and accelerate, or walk out of the race — move to a farm, become a Luddite.
Bodhii exists because that is a false choice.
